Initiative Mediation Support Deutschland
The Initiative Mediation Support Deutschland (IMSD) is an expert network consisting of five German organisations in the field of peace mediation and mediation support. The initiative aims at strengthening and further developing the instruments of peace mediation and mediation support as an essential part of the German foreign policy. To this end, the initiative works closely with the Federal Foreign Office and other key decision-makers, such as members of the German Bundestag. Upon the request of these partners, it contributes at the operational level to capacity building, awareness raising and professional and strategic exchange.
Background Information
The IMSD has been collaborating with the German Federal Foreign Office (FFO) since 2013. This cooperation has resulted in measures for capacity building and awareness-raising (e.g. tailor-made training courses and fact sheets) as well as formats for professional exchange such as international conferences and Federal Government consultations.
A number of key elements of the founding objectives of the IMSD have now been achieved through the joint activities and peace mediation has been established conceptually and institutionally in the FFO. This included a.o. the development of the "Peace Mediation Concept" and the establishment of a Peace Mediation Team within the Directorate-General for Humanitarian Assistance, Crisis Prevention Stabilisation and Post-Conflict Reconstruction. As a result, the activities and contributions of the initiative are now geared to specific needs, for example, tailor-made training, process consulting, commentaries on current issues or expert contributions to support parliamentary work in the field of peace mediation.
